Surprise! Not! Poll provides no new insight to Mayor’s Race.

2 09 2009

I really wasn’t going to post about the KHOU/KUHF poll.  However, so many of you have been asking me to comment and battering me for not discussing it.  I finally decided to weigh-in with my thoughts.

On August 25, posted below, I made the following observation, Yet, very few people are aware that we are electing a new Mayor this year.  Even fewer are aware that Bill White is term-limited and I am constantly asked why people are running against him.”  Several of you made fun of my comment.  How could people not know there is an election going on?  Seriously, folks, no one is tuned-in.

I was pleased to see that the well done KHOU/KUHF poll validated my opinion.  Insiders have a tendency to speak to each other and to generate a whirlwind among a limited number of people.  We’re excited that there is a “hot” Mayor’s race this year but “the folks” just haven’t noticed.   The poll tells us that 87% respondents indicated they plan to vote in the November election.

The campaign for Mayor is wide-open.  Every twist or turn among the candidates can make a difference in swaying the voters in their direction.

Thanks to KHOU/KUHF for commissioning this poll and sharing it with Houstonians.  Maybe just hearing the information will help more folks tune in to the election season.

And, by the way, Bill White is term-limited and cannot seek re-election as Mayor of Houston.

Considering the poor state of the economy, I would have thought that people would be looking more to their representatives for answers. I wonder if this is a trend throughout the country.

Over the past couple of decades, and I believe mostly this decade, it has become increasingly apparent that people have forgotten about their local governments, and are looking to the federal government to fix their problems. Is it a bad thing that federalism is dying? I think so. I don’t think Washington can handle it.

The good news is, If only one person votes this election, at least we can finally reveal who Dr. Sims voted for!

I have said this before and I’ll keep saying it till someone listens. Maybe that someone is Dr. Sims. Noone knows there is an election because this is the best kept secret in Houston! It is not on the TV News, it is not in the local newspapers, it is not on their websites. I have checked online and find scant evidence that this election exists. The Houston Chronicle (& their website), the local news radio stations (& their websites), etc. should have this blasted on their front pages. But go to even the local politcs sections of these websites and there is barely any mention of this election. Or of any debates. I hear rumors that there have actually already been a few debates but these are completely unadvertised. I think there may be another coming up Sept 18th but I can’t find any confirmation on the web.
This election should be shouted from the mountaintops. Instead it is hidden from all Houston citizens. We can’t blame the people when those responsible for telling us about its existence (news organizations, gov’t officials) are keeping this a secret.
