This morning, I hosted the new class of City Hall Fellows at Pierpont’s office. This elite group of young leaders will be spending the next year working in various offices across the City of Houston. In my humble opinion, the City is the true winner.
Selected from an application pool of more than 500, these 10 recent college graduates will put their lessons into action to help the City of Houston run more smoothly.
They came to chat with this ole’ City Hall junkie on a variety of topics. I was the true beneficiary of their visit.
It took them a bit to get around to the Mayor’s race and then their questions were dead on, equivalent and more sophisticated than many of my daily conversations on the topic. As well, they asked insightful, thought-provoking questions about City government. One Fellow asked me to better explain the relationship between business and governance. That was a fun discussion, especially since I have been on both sides of the aisle.
These talented Fellows will begin their year working for one of Houston’s most popular Mayors. Then, in January, they will work for the new regime. I’ll tell you one thing, any Mayor will find them an asset to City Hall.
After our chat, I felt refreshed and excited about Houston’s future. Thanks to Nancy Brainerd, their fearless leader for given me the opportunity to meet this group.

Nancy, what a hit you were with this group of City Hall Fellows! They loved your candor, humor and inside view of city government and the political picture. We are all appreciative of your time, effort and support of this organization.
